"Barbie" bagged a number of nominations for the 2024 Oscars, including best picture, best supporting actor for Gosling, and best supporting actress for America Ferrera. But Gerwig didn't get a nod for best director, and Robbie wasn't nominated for best actress. This led to plenty of backlash against the Academy for snubbing Gerwig and Robbie, especially since Gosling was nominated. Gerwig is happy 'Barbie' was nominated for best filmThe "Lady Bird" and "Little Women" director also pointed out that she still has an Oscar nomination because "Barbie" is up for best film.

True to form, Swift ensured this year's Grammy discourse would be dominated by her music, even if she didn't win a major award. Alas, the evening ended with Swift notching her record-breaking fourth win for album of the year. I was even more disappointed to watch Swift win over SZA, whose sophomore album, "SOS," earned universal acclaim. Despite being the most awarded person in Grammy history, Beyoncé has won only once in a general-field category (song of the year for "Single Ladies" in 2010). Only 11 Black artists have ever won album of the year.

When the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced the nominations Tuesday morning for the 96th annual Oscars, both Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie were dealt a shocking snub in the best director and best actress categories, respectively. It was nominated for best picture. The controversy prompted two of the film’s stars, Gosling and America Ferrera, to speak out and convey their dismay at the cold shoulder from the Academy. At last year’s awards ceremony, host Jimmy Kimmel even joked, “How does the Academy not nominate the guy who directed ‘Avatar’? What do they think he is, a woman?”There is empirical evidence that supports the notion women are overlooked by the Academy.

Amazon bought three rocket launches from SpaceX for its Project Kuiper internet satellites, the tech giant announced on Friday. The move is a surprise from Amazon, given the company's Kuiper system aims to compete with Elon Musk's Starlink in the satellite broadband market. SpaceX, the most active rocket operator in the world, has been adamant that it will continue launching Starlink competitors on its rockets. The company previously launched a number of other companies' broadband satellites to orbit and signed deals for future launches as well. In Friday's announcement, Amazon said it signed with SpaceX for three Falcon 9 launches in mid-2025.

However, his aspirations to make UniCredit the "bank of Europe" are proving trickier to realise with the CEO setting a high bar for mergers and acquisitions in the euro zone's fractured capital markets, despite having what he describes as the biggest war chest among European lenders. UniCredit bought Greece's 9% stake in Alpha Bank (ACBr.AT) and struck a commercial partnership with the Athens-based lender, also acquiring most of its Romanian operations. The CEO works closely with a small M&A team he set up within UniCredit which constantly reviews potential deals in the markets and businesses where the bank operates, people with knowledge of the matter said. But uneven regulation across the euro zone, where progress towards a single banking market has stalled, complicates cross-border deals. Calling on Europe to follow his lead, Orcel says he has unlocked UniCredit's potential by giving it a unified strategy across its 13 markets.

Former President Donald Trump will skip the third Republican debate, once again snubbing his rivals as he holds a commanding lead in the polls for the GOP nomination. “He isn’t going,” Chris LaCivita, a Trump campaign senior adviser, confirmed to NBC News on Thursday. The next debate will be held in Miami on Nov. 8, a short drive from Trump’s Florida residence. Republican hopefuls debated without Trump for a second time on Wednesday night, with several candidates stepping up their attacks on the former president. Trump told the Daily Caller in an interview published Thursday that he would not attend the third debate and indicated Republicans should rally around him, declaring there is “not going to be a breakout candidate.”

The state of the Republican race is this: Trump is not yet unbeatable but the conditions in which he could be beaten are still far from materializing. The New Hampshire poll may boost an impression that Haley is on the rise and with DeSantis ebbing, she could emerge as the strongest anti-Trump challenger. Trump appears to be eying a general election audience that punished Republicans in the midterms over the issue. But DeSantis has jumped at the chance to try to harm Trump with evangelical voters who are very important in the Iowa caucuses. In Iowa, New Hampshire and elsewhere, the race for the Republican nomination is beginning to accelerate.

Indian artist Jagjot Singh Rubal gives final touches to an oil painting of U.S. President Joe Biden, at his workshop in Amritsar on September 5, 2023, ahead of the two-day G20 summit in New Delhi. The pair's absence has sparked fears that a communique binding member states may not be issued at the end of a G20 leaders' summit — undercutting India's clout and diminishing his domestic messaging. At a pre-summit press conference Friday, India's G20 sherpa Amitabh Kant said the final declaration "is almost ready." In their joint statement after their Friday bilateral meeting, Biden and Modi "reaffirmed their commitment to the G20." It's Harris' third trip to Southeast Asia and fourth to Asia overall, and she's touched down in more countries there than any other continent. This latest journey is another opportunity for Harris to burnish her foreign policy credentials as she prepares for a bruising campaign year. U.S. officials and analysts believe Beijing's aggressive approach to the region has created an opening for Washington to forge stronger partnerships. Trump had to agree, for example, to make no threats on social media against co-defendants, witnesses and the 30 unindicted co-conspirators. The former president has excoriated special counsel Jack Smith, who indicted him twice, on social media and in speeches. Elliot Williams, a former federal prosecutor and CNN legal analyst, said that the terms were fair and did not infringe on Trump’s rights. Trump’s many late-night social media eruptions will make it hard for observers to believe that he will stick to the conditions to which he’s agreed. By Monday evening, Trump had already posted on his social media network about the bond.

Hundreds of Trump’s supporters have already faced a courtroom reckoning for their efforts to disrupt the certification of a democratic election. Trump faces charges of conspiracy to defraud the United States, conspiracy to obstruct an official proceeding, obstruction of and attempt to obstruct an official proceeding and conspiracy against rights. Another reason why Trump’s trial is unlikely to be the kind of unifying event that eases a deep national wound is that most of his Republican Party is closing ranks around him. Given the political recriminations of a trial of a former president, it is reasonable to question whether such a prosecution is in the national interest. “Anyone who asks someone else to put themselves over the Constitution should never be president of the United States again,” Pence told reporters at the Indiana state fair.

As relationship transgressions go, “phubbing” — a portmanteau of “phone” and “snubbing” — is, on the surface, fairly benign. A recent study linked higher levels of phubbing to marital dissatisfaction, and a 2022 study found it can lead to feelings of distrust and ostracism. One study found that those who phub a lot are more likely to be phubbed themselves, creating a kind of ripple effect. He said the issue comes up among the couples he works with on an almost weekly basis. Fortunately for most couples, it’s a relatively easy issue to fix, he said.

Circor, an industrial machinery maker, said KKR had sweetened its all-cash deal from $49 to $51 per share in the wake of a rival bid of $52.65 per share in cash from an unidentified party. One of Fairbanks' subsidiaries is Hunt Valve, which competes with Circor in providing valve systems to the Navy. Arcline and KKR declined to comment. Circor said it rejected the higher offer because it concluded there was a risk of a protracted review by antitrust regulators that would jeopardize the deal. Circor shares ended at $51.49 on Tuesday, above the $51 per share deal clinched with KKR, indicating that some investors believed an even better deal was possible.

His move away from PSG, however, is of his own volition as he felt the French club lacked a project for the future while fan unrest only hastened his exit. The hard currency squeeze has raised concerns about Egypt's ability to repay foreign debt.
